According to the government’s research, about 200,000 people in the country have not had a conversation with a friend or a relative in over a month.
A British commission found that nearly nine million people in the country either often, or always, feel loneliness.
A 2017 report by the New Economics Foundation found that loneliness costs U.K. employers $3.4 billion per year in employee health problems, productivity losses and staff turnover.
Given the significant health consequences of loneliness and isolation, we must prioritize building social connection the same way we have prioritized other critical public health issues such as tobacco, obesity, and substance use disorders.
