Message Notes

A biblical theology of the Fall agrees that people are committed to their own self-protection, seeking their own security and significance.  But that fact is a terrible problem.  In a Trinitarian universe, where final reality is other-centered relationship, the priority drive toward self-protection is out of step with the way things are supposed to be.  Larry Crabb, The Safest Place on Earth

Most men spend the energy of their lives trying to eliminate risk, or squeezing it down to a more manageable size.  John Eldredge, Wild At Heart

We “have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” Colossians 3:10

They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.  “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,  who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”  Mark 10:32-34

Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.” Luke 18:31

Just as there were many who were appalled at him— his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness.  Isaiah 52:14

I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.  Isaiah 50:6-7

When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.  2 Samuel 23:11-12
